In showing commitment to South Africa and our economy, Toyota South Africa Motors have begun the manufacturing and soon to be selling of the brand-new Corolla Cross in South Africa. This great news not only means that our country gains on the finance side but as well as on the motor vehicle side of things. Toyota may have realized the popularity of their corolla and thus they approved its SUV counterpart, the Corolla Cross.

The all-new Corolla Cross, although part of the Corolla family, looks slightly different to the Corolla sedan as it has a more crossover look to it with black cladding around the bumpers, side skirts, and wheel arches. The new Corolla Cross is positioned slightly larger than the C-HR but smaller than the RAV4.

The beast under the bonnet contains 1.8-litre petrol engine, producing 103 kW and 177 Nm. A hybrid version of the Corolla Cross will also be available equipped with an electric motor. It is a front-wheel drive and for those that need it or even those who just want it, it has a 487 litre boot space. Inside the cabin of the car is suspected to look similar to the Sedan with some feature differences as the Corolla Cross will be made in South Africa and not Japan like the sedan version.

In addition to being a smooth driving SUV, the Corolla Cross will be built at the Prospecton plant in KZN meaning importing fees are no more and that simply means a great vehicle for a cheaper price. Toyota SA President and CEO Andrew Kirby feels that the Corolla Cross is the right vehicle for the right time, given the recent growth in the SUV market. He, Kirby, also alluded to the fact that the Corolla Cross is the perfect combination of drivability, roominess, comfort and high tech features.

More so than being a great all round vehicle, because it will be made on SA shores it means that there will be more than 1000 jobs created, which is a big feather in the hat to the Toyota brand in my opinion. You can expect the Corolla Cross to be available later in the year in right and left drive so keep a lookout and you might be one of the first lucky few to be driving in luxury and style.
