Nokia is back in the game and more so they are running stock #Android. The Nokia 3, 5, 6 and Nokia 8 were launched this year and I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Nokia 5. The Nokia 5 reminds me of the iPhone 6 with Google software. Let’s get down to business and look at the top 5 things to consider when purchasing this phone…

1..DESIGN

This phone has a metal uni-body design, the 2.5D front glass on the front of the phone is rich black which blends in seamlessly with the deep black colours in the display. The camera bump is a bit of a schlep; this is not a deal-breaker. The phone’s classic Nokia rectangular design feels really premium and although it is far from 2017’s bezel-less movement, you will appreciate the quality of the metal on this phone. The fingerprint sensor seems small at first but is ALWAYS responsive, and since it is not a button, you simply have to tap it.

The volume buttons are clicky and in no way feels cheap. The phone carries a 5.5 inch display and in all honesty, when holding it in the hand it reminds you of the screen size all the time. The main disadvantage of the design is that it is not for single-handed use, at least not for everyone. The comfort and usability of single-handed use of this phone would be the only factor that would prevent me from recommend me from using this phone – so get over this and you will have the best looking smartphone for this price segment.Nokia-5-rear-on-table-close-up-792x446

2. SOFTWARE

Any person who knows some mobile tech would know that purchasing the new #nokia phones would be for the software. Stock #Android software is when the phone’s software experience is purely the design of Google, showcasing only Google apps for music, photos, messaging and even notes and calendar.

Unlike other cellphones that use their own custom skins and themes that could waste memory, Google Android software makes your Nokia 5 experience intuitive. Free flowing design of the software adds a very minimalistic yet expensive feeling to your phone. Using this phone shows you how your apps speak to each other and all come into contact with your GOOGLE account. You will always get updates first with Nokia’s smart move going stock android.

3. PERFORMANCE

What I enjoyed most was that WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn worked really well. Apple has a reputation for social media applications – although android does too, and having a Nokia with this software will very well show you this. I enjoyed every bit of socialising using this cellphone and found that there was no lag in the performance. Even when using the camera in my applications, the quality was never pixelated in any of the applications and this was highly appreciating. The battery life complimented this phone’s performance as the 3000mAh battery lasted me a day and a half with heavy usage – and I had all three of my gmail accounts very much active during my use.

4. CAMERA

For sure, you might think that you are purchasing a phone valued at R3599 (ZAR) for R2999 (ZAR) now since the price went down, that the camera will simply be mediocre – fear not, this is not the case. A 13MP rear-facing camera and 8MP selfie cam. I used this phone to take pictures in all sorts of lighting and all I could think of was how detailed the pictures are – and if you are a fan of the ‘chrome’ effect, you could always click on that HDR button which works really well to get punchy colours to your pictures.

5. AFFORDABILITY

For the price of this phone (R2999 – R3699) depending where you buy it – it ticks all of the boxes.

  • Great build quality – full metal design
  • Long lasting battery
  • 3.5mm  Headphone jack (Haha)
  • Super fast finger-print sensor (that is always on – so just tap)
  • Really good camera (Rear and selfies)
  • 5.5′ inch display – great sunlight legibility
  • Stock Android software – first to get updates
  • Corning Gorilla Glass
  • 13MP Rear-camera and 8MP selfie cam

TO SUM IT UP…

This phone has more pros than cons – however it will remind you that it is not a flagship phone when you see those wide bezels on the top and bottom. It still uses a micro usb 2.0 charging connector, and the skimpy 2GB of RAM (There is a 3GB version) is noticeable when scrolling fast while web-browsing and other apps run in the background. If you need a phone that can do an all-round good job, then the #Nokia 5 is definitely for you.

Nokia has put lots of focus on marketing their new 2017 devices and all with good reason. The Nokia 5 is a clear indication that Nokia is back in the game and is here to stay – making the right moves and showing the industry at the right time.
